about

THIS IS A FIVE SONG ALBUM

“Music is the space between the notes.”
~ Claude Debussy

•••••

I woke up early one morning with an arpeggio in my head and went straight into the studio and recorded the theme and melody for what would become the title song for “The Vig”.

Over the next couple of weeks, the rest of these songs just fell out of the cupboard for me. In most cases they were written in a day, then fleshed out a little further as they developed.

But for the most part, I found it like preparing a steamer pot of mussels and clams: not many other ingredients were necessary. With a little wine, garlic, pepper flakes and parsley they simply cooked themselves.

I guess this occupies the space between Furniture Music and low-key Cinematic.

From a young age I was struck by the compositions of Erik Satie, and it wasn’t until I’d finished The Vig by several weeks that I realized there are faint echoes of his work here (though little trace of his talent or originality!). Years later in 1995 there was an album by William Orbit that struck me in a similar way, “Pieces In a Modern Style”. His take on Ravel’s “Pavane Pour Une Infante” is a case in point.

While I wouldn’t consider this to be Ambient music per se, I think it does fall under the larger umbrella and follows Brian Eno’s idea that Ambient music must be as ignorable as it is interesting. It’s a very broad category and one that I’ve been attracted to all my life. This was certainly very satisfying to make and I hope you the listener can give it a spin one early morning as the sun comes up.

“In a love affair, as with writing a new song, while it's left to be achieved there is the potential for perfection. Afterwards you have to accept what you've made, with all its flaws, until enough time has passed for you to reshape it in your memory."
~ Andrea Newman (adapted)
